Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten

Fun and educational activities to give your child a jumpstart to success

What can I do to prepare my child for kindergarten? Every parent asks themselves this question when the reality of starting kindergarten is approaching.

In kindergarten your child will develop skills in many different areas, both academic and social behavioral. Going to kindergarten makes up a very small part of each day. The key to success is your participation at home.I’ve been on both sides of the kindergarten coin. I have helped two of my own boys through kindergarten, and I’m currently an instructor that works with kindergarteners who are lagging behind in reading, writing, math, social, and behavioral skills. Most, if not all, students have a skill they need to work on. No child enters school knowing everything.

I’m here to help you get your child as prepared as possible. This work won’t end on the first day of school, but it will continue throughout the school year. We’ll cover everything from classroom basics to the academic skills your child will need. Your child’s Social Emotional Learning will be just as important as their academic learning. With this book, I will give you the tools to prepare your child for this new and exciting adventure into kindergarten.

Have a great day.

Writing Myth Monday #18

Welcome to another installment of Writing Myths Monday. I hope this Monday morning finds you well. Let’s jump into this week’s myth.

Writing Myth #18 – I Always Have to Love My Writing

At some point in every project you come to a moment when you don’t like it or you hate it. You don’t want to spend one more moment on the piece. That feeling is just a fact of writing. All that feeling signals is that it’s time to take a break from that piece. Take a walk to clear your mind, or other physical activity. Work on another piece for a couple of days.

The space you give yourself is beneficial to you and your writing. You will be able to look at the story in a fresh new light.

Until next time, be happy, stay safe, and good writing vibes into the universe.

Writing Exercise Friday August 28th

Welcome to your Friday Writing Exercise. Get your writing muscles ready like a professional athlete. You need to stretch those writing muscles before you get to the main writing event. So let’s get to it.

Twenty Minute Writing Challenge – Write a story using one of the following titles:

  • How to Read a Bowl of Noodles
  • Man Mistaken For Troll
  • The Day the Machines Went Bezerk
  • Night Goblins Exposed

You have twenty minutes to write as much as you can. I like writing these in the style of the National Enquirer or the Onion. The wilder and more outlandish the better. The point is to get writing.

Five Senses Bonus Exercise Take the story you created in the twenty minute write and do a five senses edit. When you do a senses edit go through your story looking for the senses. Using highlighters assign a color to each of the senses. Sight, Hearing, Touch, Smell and Taste. Once you highlight the senses you can see how balanced the senses are in your story. If you are light or too heavy in a sense then you can add more or remove some. The goal is to have a balance of senses.

Until next time, be happy, stay safe and good vibes into the universe.

Writing Myths Monday #17

Welcome to another installment of Writing Myths Monday. I hope this Monday morning finds you well. Let’s jump into this week’s myth.

Writing Myth #17 – Writing Requires Sacrifice

Well to be perfectly honest, what doesn’t involve some level of sacrifice? Every choice you make means something needs to change. It’s all how you look at the choice. It’s only a sacrifice if you perceive it that way.

Yes, you will have to make choices between writing and going out with friends or sleeping an hour longer. But what makes the choice worth it? It’s the end result you’re working toward and achieving it. That’s what makes it all worth it.

Until next time, be happy, stay safe, and good writing vibes into the universe.

Writing Myths Monday #16

Welcome to another installment of Writing Myths Monday. I hope this Monday morning finds you well. Let’s jump into this week’s myth.

Writing Myth #16 – I’m waiting for my big book idea to hit me.

As writers, we write. If you sit around waiting for ideas to find you, you’ll be waiting a long time. Your big book idea will reveal itself when you least expect, usually when you’re writing. That’s one reason I like writing short stories. One short story I wrote inspired me to write a middle grade novel on the same topic with an expanded cast of characters.

If I hadn’t been actively writing, I’m sure that idea wouldn’t have occurred to me.

Until next time, be happy, stay safe, and good writing vibes into the universe.

Writing Myth Monday #15

Welcome to another installment of Writing Myths Monday. I hope this Monday morning finds you well. Let’s jump into this week’s myth.

Writing Myth #15 – Your Debut Novel Is Your First Novel

The first novel you write is the one where you do a bulk of your learning. Most likely your debut novel will be the second or third one you write. I’m not saying those other books won’t sell but it may be down the road. I never give up on a story. Ultimately it will sell in some form. Just keep on writing. Every word you write gets you closer to your goal.

Monday Writing Myths #14

Welcome to another installment of Writing Myths Monday. I hope this Monday morning finds you well. Let’s jump into this week’s myth.

Writing Myth #14 – Overnight success stories

Don’t believe the hype. It is extremely rare that “someone off the street” decides their going to write a novel, write it, sell it and make a million dollars. What actually happens is the writer has been practicing the craft of writing, working hard and every piece they write gets better. They wrote a story that clicked with not only a publisher but also a certain segment of the reading public. They were a ten year overnight success.

Focus on writing a great story and the other stuff will come.

Until next time, be happy, stay safe, and good writing vibes into the universe.
